Contemporary art with a natural influence
Everything from simpleton materials to electronic media go into the contemporary artwork going on show next weekend at Lakeview Museum.
" 'Nature/ Education: Artists Respond To Their Environment' compares works by contemporary artists who specify with culture and the byproducts of an urban society with artists who are responding to category and the natural environment," writes Kate Lydon in a train prepared for the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, where the exhibition was first displayed in 2006.
The exhibit features the work of 15 artists from across the United States.
The artists "show a witchcraft with where they live and work - and attempt to make sense of their natural, as well as social and political environments - by creating contemporary forms that divide up narrative stories of memory, time, absence, position and representation," Lydon writes.
Kim Abeles of Los Angeles, for archetype, has created a series of "Smog Plates" by stenciling portraits of U.S. presidents on pampas white porcelain dinner plates, then mounting them on the roof of her apartment edifice to expose them to the polluted air. When the stencils are removed, the presidents' images become visible in smog. Abeles incorporates their historical quotes about the medium and business on the plates.
Her first plate featured President William McKinley, who was president when two automotive factories were uninterrupted full production in Detroit, the start of a lifestyle that now contributes 70 percent of air dirtying, she says.
