App Watch: Playing a Game on Your TV With iPad and iPhone
It’s a hardly surreal using a phone and iPad that combined outlay anywhere from $600 to well more than $1,000 to control a $3 video nervy, but it’s also pretty fun. And it’s a smart gimmick, since most iPad owners promising own an iPhone or iPod Touch as well.
While there are other games that toy with this idea — most stunningly Electronic Arts’ Scrabble game, using the iPad as a surface and iPhone as a tile rack — Chopper 2 is one of the first to mesh this idea into a flying game in an easy and intuitive way.
David Frampton said he had all in more than a year developing the game, polishing graphics, calligraphy music and designing new challenges. Then, Apple released the iPad.
“I memories it would be cool to use an iPhone to control the game, so I just went and tried to beat a hasty retreat it happen,” Frampton said.
Within a day, he had a working example, filmed a short video, and posted it to YouTube:
While he was first knowledge how to program video games, Frampton designed and created Chopper as an deference to games he’d played on the Apple II, figuring it would be an easy font of game to create.
He released his original game for the Mac in 2003, and then reworked it for the iPhone in every now to be one of the first games in the App Store.
The first Chopper game sold more than 350,000 copies, and the result currently is hovering in the top 10 spot for paid iPhone games and within the top 5 for the iPad.
