Did a lake trigger a brutal disease?
Researchers investigating a deadly disease bundle near a New Hampshire lake are tracking clues that reach from a delicacy eaten on Guam to a 3.5 billion-year-old group of bacteria and the green scum that coats many New England waters.
The scum - blooms of cyanobacteria often misnamed blue-green algae - produces a toxin that doctors at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., have suspicions about might have triggered cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis along the north shore of adjacent Mascoma Lake.
Using patient records and mapping software, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock conspire looked for ALS clusters in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Their prolegomenon data suggest that the disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s bug, is about 2.5 times more prevalent among people who live within a half-mile of not work bodies with past or current cyanobacteria colonies.

$17000 walks out the door at Lloyd Center store
PORTLAND, Ore. – A cheeky theft from a store in the Lloyd Center mall has dealt a five-silhouette loss to a local family business.
Joe Kassab says a man walked into his minor store at the Northeast Portland mall, showed a duty card belonging to an employee and a lot of cash, then walked out with a diamond and fillet a few minutes later worth in excess of $17,000 - without paying a dime.
The unscathed episode was caught on video by a video security system. The purloining suspect did not display a weapon or threaten any employees, according to investigators.
The actions were captured on a video insurance system. The suspect was wearing a blue/green jacket and a blue Los Angeles Dodgers baseball cap. He had neatly trimmed facial locks.
Kassab said the theft was “a big hit” during hard times to the longtime Portland small business but he is under obligation no employees were harmed. The employee who helped the suspect said the G-man was “very calculating.”
Kassab said he has been robbed in the previous, leading him to install the comprehensive video system. He said since he put the cameras in grade, there had been no other problems with thefts or robberies.
Portland police are investigating the snitching and ask anyone who recognizes the suspect to contact them immediately.
